Vascular Flora of Manitoba - BIOL 3242
This course is an introduction to the principles and methods of plant taxonomy (the science of classification, naming, and identification) emphasizing the identification of Manitoba’s vascular plant species. This course also includes a detailed overview of contemporary classification systems as well as brief accounts of the distribution and post-glacial history of the main floristic associations in the province.
Prospective students should note that a collection of 20 different vascular plant species is required for this course (see course catalogue description). It is important that you start your collection over the summer when plant diversity is high and species are relatively easy to identify. By September, the number of species that are available are relatively few and those that are in flower are often difficult to identify. Click the links below for detailed instructions on collecting and georeferenceing your plant collections and the course syllabus. Cardboards for constructing your plant press are available from Jaime Stringer (jaime.stringer[AT]umanitoba[DOT]ca), Room 212, Biological Sciences Building. Additional course materials for current students can be found on UMLearn.
